4 steps to make an active verb sentence a passive verb sentence

  1. Make direct object (DO) the subject
    • Ben gave Grace a dozen roses for Valentine’s Day.
  2. Add a form of the verb to be to the existing verb (was, were…)
    • Grace was given….
  3. Make the original subject part of the prepositional phrase beginning with by.
    • Grace was given … by Ben.
  4. Add additional phrases from original sentence.
    • Grace was given a dozen roses for Valentine’s Day by Ben.

4 steps to make a passive verb sentence into an active verb sentence.

  1. Make the object of the preposition the subject.
    • Ben
  2. Remove to be form of the verb.
    • Ben gave
  3. Make subject the direct object.
    • Ben gave Grace….
  4. Finish sentence using remaining phrases.
    • Ben gave Grace a dozen roses for Valentine’s Day.
